Export your messages

Create a text-focused export, then upload the ZIP directly. Your archive is opened and filtered locally in your browser.

One ZIP per chat

WhatsApp

  1. 1

Open WhatsApp and enter one conversation you want to contribute.

  2. 2

Open the conversation menu: tap the contact or group name on iPhone, or tap the three-dot menu on Android.

  3. 3

Choose Export Chat. On Android, it may be under More.

  4. 4

When asked, select Without Media. Do not include photos, videos, voice notes, or documents.

  5. 5

Save or send the resulting .zip file to the device where you will use this portal.

  6. 6

Repeat these steps for every conversation you want to contribute. You can select all of the ZIP files together during upload.

Correct file: a ZIP containing _chat.txt, with no media attached.

One complete ZIP

  1. 1

In Instagram, open Settings and activity, then go to Accounts Center.

  3. 3

Select your Instagram profile, choose Export to device, then choose to customize the information.

  4. 4

  5. 5

Choose the date range you want, set the format to JSON, and set media quality to Low.
